My Beach trips.

Chennai is getting hot and humid and in the coming days she will become hotter and hottest. The heat and humidity is becoming unbearable. But there is something that I love to do during these days. To cool myself and to break the monotony of my daily routine; I just  walk up  to the beach which is a couple of kilometers from  my house.  A trip to the beach is rejuvenating. It is  like opening a new window everyday,  endless sea ahead, the shining white sand ,the blue sky which keeps changing its tone now and then,.the colorful motor boats, ships moored in the deep sea visible as if through a smoke screen and smaller boats plying in shallow waters   are always a feast to the eyes.

The sound  “chundal”…… ( it is snack made of  Bengal gram or ground nuts ) pierces the ear when one wants to concentrate on the sound of waves kissing the shore.  These small time vendors selling chundal pattani laced with raw minced mangoes try to woo the customers by showing off  their container right under your eyes( nose) and many fall for it. There are also vendors selling murukku and kuzhipaniyarams. Apart from these traditional normal eats there are also the chatpata items  like  panipuris , chats and the super duper favourite of all . the  ice creams .

I also fancy watching  toddlers and young children playing in the sand and water. Those who are fitness savvy ; old and young , walk, jog or do aerobics. There are quite a few who  come to enjoy the evening breeze. One can also see huge dogs, pampered ones  brought by their owners for a good exercise. There also dogs of lesser God moving around in search of food or basking in the evening Sun worrying  how to get their next meal.

On weekends the crowd swells and so do  the vendors, Early morning walkers enjoy buying fresh vegetables  as the vegetable vendor who frequents the beach gets a captive crowd.. It is  good for morning walkers as it saves them a trip to market albeit the prices are  slightly high .

The beach is small and is frequented by neighbouring people. The resident association takes care of the upkeep of the surrounding areas.  Police provide security to the people and it is intensified in the evening when darkness sets in.

Shall get some pictures soon .

take care.

Tamil Poet Kambar’s Tomb

People in Tamilnadu who have read Ramayana would be familiar with name of poet  Kambar. He translated the whole epic in Tamil and it came to be known as Kambaramayanam.More details here

Recently , a trip to Nattarasankottai in Sivaganga district ,we chanced upon the place where the Tamil poet was laid to rest. unknown to many tourists, this place is tucked away in a tiny village of Nattaraasan kottai . There is a small shrine inside where he is entombed and outside there is a shrine for Anjaneya.

The path leading to the shrine and is lined with plants, shrubs and small trees all having medicinal properties. There were even plants which serve as antidote for snake venom.

I was supposed to post on Munnar 2 but My Pilgrimage is linked to this blog and hence decided to go ahead with this.

see you soon.

My Sirumalai trip

I recently visited  Sirumalai, a small hill full of green forests rich in herbs which is just 25 kms from my house. The ascent was thrilling and the climate was cool as it is at a height of 1000 meters. There are about 23 hair pin  bends to reach  the top . After a couple of kilometres up the hill  we could see the town below. The air was fresh with rich fragrance of  of herbs.

The main cultivation here is pepper, cardamom, lemon and bananas known as  Sirumalai pazham, a small local variety of plantain  which is supposed to have medicinal properties. Each   plantain costs about Rs 5-6  and the skin is very thick and fibrous ,one would find a plantain the size of a little finger 🙂  inside.

The village atop is a small with 4-5  shops and a few low roofed houses. There are about 200 families  involved in extracting honey from honey combs.   There is  beautiful lake here  bordered by tall green trees. Boating facility is available too for those who want to slowly glide through the placid waters of the lake. The virgin beauty of the hill is intact as tourism is not in full swing here. This place would certainly make a nature lover happy. There are no hotels or canteens here . Hence pollution is less too.

Here are a few pictures. Enjoy them. I am off to Goa and shall be back with more information.Till then …

squirrels

Mercury is soaring up. The scorching heat is becoming unbearable. The power situation has not changed. We thought a respite was in store for us when there was an announcement that power cuts would be increased for bigger cities  and it would help us with better power supply . But here, the   earlier 8 hours have been extended by a couple of hours. 😦 . So instead of moping I have to find avenues to keep myself engaged and  yesterday, I captured some pictures of two squirrels having an after noon siesta .It was fun to watch  them retreating to the dark hole of the ventilator for some peace and quiet. Blessed souls, not bothered about power cuts.
